What About A Parent's Right to Choose?
"In California, a young girl under the age of 18 can't get a flu shot or an aspirin from the school nurse without a parent being notified... But a doctor can perform an abortion without notifying a parent or guardian."

MORE guv'ment value judgements
If you recall a previous rant of mine, I noticed while looking at my grocery receipts some odd "values" the Commonwealth places on certain items via taxation. Now that I have a kid and a stay-at-home wife, we're noticing even more of the guv'ment's wacky hijinks, so I thought I'd revisit the issue.
Now, we all know that prescription and most over-the-counter medicine isn't usually taxed by the State, apparently on the premise that sick people would rather die than pay an extra 5% for their meds. Or maybe it's because old people who are paying 300% of their fixed income from Uncle Sam for medications already just can't afford another 5% added to the top by good ole' Uncle Warner.
But I digress.
Whatever the rationale, it's easy to find humor in the application of what's "medically necessary" and what, according to our beneficient guv, is not. Let's make this interactive, shall we? Which of the following items my family actually recently purchased do you think should be exempted from taxation due to medical necessity?
- mouthwash
- children's tylenol
- shampoo for my wife's hair
- conditioner for my wife's hair
- lotion recommended by our pediatrician for my son's eczema
Has everyone finished writing down their answers? You there in the back, you done? Okay class, pencils down, pass your papers to the right, let's grade them. The answer is: they're all tax-free except the last two.
That's right - the guv'ner still prefers that my wife has clean but unmanageable hair. But now it gets even wackier: apparently it's medically necessary that I have minty-fresh breath, but the State would prefer that my son scratches his own skin off until it bleeds. but hey, when he starts crying from the self-inflicted pain, there's always Tylenol®!
And people say that our government doesn't care about its citizens...
