Things I Learned In My Monroe Scholars' Freshman Seminar on 20th Century American Literature
- Smoking is frequently a symbol for an empty life, or lack of sustenance (i.e. smoking instead of eating or drinking, or having meaningful relationships).
- South African accents are cool, although not as cool as Australians.
- There are many black people who will hate me personally just for being born white. There is nothing I can do about this.
corollary to #3: Anything I might do to attempt to rectify this situation won't help at all. It could even make it worse.
