Things I Learned In My Monroe Scholars' Freshman Seminar on 20th Century American Literature

  1. Smoking is frequently a symbol for an empty life, or lack of sustenance (i.e. smoking instead of eating or drinking, or having meaningful relationships).
  2. South African accents are cool, although not as cool as Australians.
  3. There are many black people who will hate me personally just for being born white. There is nothing I can do about this.

corollary to #3: Anything I might do to attempt to rectify this situation won't help at all. It could even make it worse.
